Palm Beach Club, 1990

At the time I didn’t know if it was the flashing disco lights, the almost deafening level of the bass beat or the fact I had never seen a girl dancing atop such a massive speaker before but one thing was for sure, I was totally smitten. There was a problem though, I couldn’t show it.

This was who I was back then; a tough, dominant dyke. I wasn’t about to let some little 22 year old girl know that at that very moment I couldn’t string two sentences together to save my life, that watching her hair flying, her body moving, keeping perfect rhythm with not only the DJ but my quickly pacing heart was doing me in, unraveling me. Oddly, I could somehow hear her laughter even as I was being deafened to everything else and it was a sound, one I wanted to explore further.

See, I had just met this crowd online at one of those Bulletin Boards Systems. I’d chatted with them and I knew that they expected ACE the Master Dyke and her stoic cool self and here I was there now at this party watching a girl I had never laid my eyes on before other than to see her type in a chat room and being totally dismantled by ever shake of her ass and show of her thighs. Watching her my head was reeling or should I say swooning? No! I didn’t swoon, not me! I’d been around, I’d seen my share of strippers, exotic dancers, hell I grew up in Montrose (77006) which back in the 1980s was the gay/leather/hustler/drag Mecca of Texas. But this girl was different. She was sensual yet bubbly, hyper yet totally self aware (was she aware of the state she had me in I wondered?). She was so extroverted and every where she landed, once she came down from atop her throne of speakers, people watched her, gravitated to her.

I must have watched her for hours. One thing for sure, I was pretty convinced I had to meet her. I had to meet this “Firefly”..

Happy Birthday, CJ! 😉
